ARTHRITIS: A NATION IN PAIN


Arthritis, a condition that can reduce strength and mobility for completeting routine chores, is a pain to anyone who works.  Arthritis is one of the most common disabling conditions, and refers to more than 100 different illnesses.  The most common types are osteoarthritis (caused by cartilage destruction), rheumatoid (genetic arthritis), bursitis, and tendonitis.

Million people in the US have doctor diagnosed Arthritis.

     More than half of the individuals who have arthritis are younger    
     than 65 years old.

     Nearly 300,000 children are affected by arthritis.

     Overall, women are affected more often than men.

     Arthritis is second only to heart disease as a cause of work
     disability. 

     Arthritis has an annual economic impact of $128 billion nationally.

     Arthritis is considered one of the leading causes of disability in
     the US!!

The Arthritis Foundation-Indiana Chapter is committed to being involved as a four year nonprofit, disability related partner supporting the mission of the USDA National AgrAbility Project.  Ultimately, our goal is to build upon current objectives which include education and support of agricultural professionals and their families who have been affected by arthritis.

Many different drugs are used to treat arthritis and related diseases. The ones taken will depend on the type of arthritis that is diagnosed. Some are available without a prescription while others must be prescribed by a doctor. Always check with a doctor before taking any medication including over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements, and dietary aids.

Arthritis affects approximately one-third of all adult farm and ranch operators and is considered one of the leading causes of disability by customers of the USDA AgrAbility Project. With the average age of the American farmer climbing above 57, increasingly more farmers will find tasks difficult to complete. Many agricultural workers do not know they may be at risk of developing arthritis.
